I Can Has Blog Post
Tuesday, June 24, 2008
It feels like forever ago since I last posted about the motorcycle accident. I can't tell you what it means to me and my family to have so many folks think of us during these tough times. The comments on my blog, posts that were written by others, phone calls and text messages I received reminded me that this ghey group of poker broggers really do keep their friends on the felt in close guard when the times get tough. The bulk of my time since the accident has been either dealing with major audit issues at work or aiding in the care of ChickJax's parents. They were able to be discharged this past Friday; however, she still cannot walk and he slowly hobbles around with a walker when he is not passed out on pain meds.
Though they were in their 60's and not exactly spring chickens, they were still active individuals. He worked five days a week in a steel factory and she was very active,"hip granny." When you are senior citizens and still riding a Harley, you have to be relatively active. Then in a flash something like this happens and you go from active folks to wheelchair and walker bound. It looks like they will slowly recover and be fine in the long run, but I don't expect them to ever be the same physically. Thankfully there was no head trauma or paralysis.
Again thanks for all the thoughts and prayers.
I actually did play some poker recently when I had some down time at the house one night. I played a 90 player sng and was playing rather well. I eventually busted in 20th place in a coin flip that would have put me in the chiplead, but d'ems the breaks. It feels rather terarded to be proud of a 20th place finish in a 90 player sng, while my brogger brethren are consistantly posting mad winnings, but right now just playing ANY poker - even losing poker - feels good to me. It means all worries are off even but for a short time.
Every so often a speech or quote emerges from the sports world - be it from an athlete, coach, journalist or fan - that truly transcends the human spirit. DiMaggio's retirement speech and some of Lombardi's quotes come to mind. This morning I awoke to ESPN and the newest quote to go down in the annals of sports history. I shall remember it for the rest of my life.
"Kobe, tell me how my ass taste."
~ Shaq
I honestly don't give two shits about NBA basketball, Kobe, Shaq or their little feud, but for whatever reason, hearing Shaq sing that just made me laugh this morning.
This post by the Goat is hilarious and deserves some props (like many of his posts). I must now go back and read all the Stupid/System posts again. Thanks Goat...keep'em comin'.
That is all.
Until next time, may the felt be with you.

Craziness
Monday, June 16, 2008
This past Friday I had just gotten back to work from lunch and headed to my bosses office for an important meeting regarding our upcoming audit. Midway through the meeting the receptionist knocked on the door to let me know I had an important call. This receptionist is relatively new and doing a great job, but on occasion her view of important is skewed. Within the last month she had me paged for a phone call that turned out to be a solicitation for toner cartridges. So when I was pulled out of the meeting I was immediately skeptical.
It's funny how quickly importance can shift from an *important meeting* to something truly important.
ChickJax's mother (Ninny) and father-in-law (FIL) were headed to the beach on their Harley when a car pulled out in front of them. FIL had the bike on cruise doing 59 miles an hour and didn't see the car pull out until they were only about 50 feet away. FIL dropped the bike, which most likely saved their lives, but the damage would still be done. FIL managed to stay at the bike, but broke his pelvis and ribs and had other minor injuries.
Ninny didn't fair as well as she was thrown from the bike. She has severe road rash, broken ribs, torn ligaments in her legs, problems with her lungs and a laundry list of other minor issues. She has asthma and is having major problems breathing. She doesn't have a spleen so they are concerned about other risks such as pneumonia since she can barely breathe. To top it off they think she's having some heart problems as well.
They were airlifted from the scene to UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill, where they will probably be for some time. They don't expect Ninny to be able to walk for up to 2 months. FIL won't be walking anytime soon either with all the problems to his pelvis. It's amazing they are not dead, paralyzed or riddled with head injuries. Thankfully they were wearing helmets.
The expectation is they will be in the hospital for a while, then laid up at home (or a home, since they'll probably be with us or other family members during recovery). There was an 18 wheeler in front of them and behind them and apparently the one behind them narrowly missed slamming into the crash. The driver of the car received a failure to yield citation so all indications are this is 100% his fault; however, from what I'm to understand, this intersection has had numerous wrecks due to the hill coming up to the cross section.
I do still have all the important work stuff going on, not to mention it is ChickJax's birthday this week, so there will be some hectic times in the near future. That's nothing compared to what they are going through right now. I'll be back posting when I can, but not sure how frequently that will be for now.
Until next time, may the felt be with you.

Underdogs Unite!
Friday, June 13, 2008
On Wednesday night I was playing around on the Bodog sports betting website and noticed they had the Celtics as a 7 1/2 point underdog against the Lakers for Thursday nights game. I pretty much suck at your every day sports betting, which is why I avoid it for the most part (other than the football pool I've been in for many, many years). But something jumped out at me about that line. Did they really think the Celctics were a 7 1/2 underdog?
I am a sucker for the underdog, which is probably why I suck at sports betting. I see a longshot underdog and I am all over it. I am a perfect example of why other people make money on sports betting. But for once I saw an underdog bet that didn't feel much like a longshot; it just made sense. Sure the Lakers were fresh off a win at home and were playing again at home, but it's not like it was a very convincing win. And the Celtics have pretty much pwned the Lakers this year save for that last game. So what was I missing? I decided to drop some dorra dorra birrs y'arr.
Having already watched the Cubs mount a come back and win earlier in the day to sweep the Braves, I was already in good spirits as I settled on the couch for the Celtics/Lakers game last night. I also had a few spirits of the liquid kind in me, which didn't hurt my mood. It didn't take long for things to change though. In what felt like a flash, the Celtics were down 20 points. I cursed my luck at sports betting, but then decided not to let it get to me.
I've come to the realization that, even when you have money on a game, you just gotta sit back and enjoy the show, regardless of the outcome. In other words, if you have so much money on a game that you let it effect you, then that's too much money to be putting on the line. I didn't have too much money on the line, so I just decided to sit back and let the balls fall as they may.
Then I passed ass out.
The last thing I remember was the 1st quarter ending and the Celtics being down by at least 20 points. I guess part of me knew it was okay to fall asleep and just let it go. Let that money float away into space. Talk about coming to terms with your decisions way too quickly.
When I awoke on the couch it was 1:00 a.m. and I had a monkey on my back. That's not a euphemism folks. Apparently boy had come in the living room at some point and thought it would be funny to put one of his huge stuffed animals on me while I was sleeping. At first it scared the shit out of me, but I soon got a chuckle out of the boys shenanigans.
I decided not to stay up and see who won the game as I was pretty much still out of it. I headed straight for bed without worrying about the game or the money. When I awoke this morning I went through my normal routine of breakfast with my good friend Sportscenter. As I stuffed eggs down my throat, I just about choked up when I saw the Celtics had won by 6 points. I later found out they were down as many as 24 points before making the come back to win by 6.
Sweet Lincoln's mullet you gotta love the NBA. I almost never watch the NBA, but it seems like whenever I do there are major swings in the games. This game was no different. I only wish I could have stayed awake long enough to watch it play out.
I can't believe I just wrote an entire post about one measely sports bet. I can't believe you just read an entire post about one measely sports bet.
Sucker.
Until next time, may the felt be with you.

Guard Your Cornhole!
Monday, June 09, 2008
I completely forgot about the freeroll yesterday, but I had good reason. I was building one of these with my buddies...
With the deck pretty much complete and landscaping of the backyard coming soon, it made sense to focus our immediate attention on a cornhole set.
Oh hells yeah. Damn that's gonna be fun this summer. For those that don't know what cornhole is, check it.
Now that the BBThree is officially over (congrats to those who brought home the bacon), I was thinking about having another one of these. I'll see if I can get something together quick. Sweet...I qualified this as a poker post.
Today is the big iphone 2.0 announcement and I'm hoping for some good news. I've been wanting one of those bad boys for some time now and with my current carrier, Alltel, being bought out by Verizon, now is as good a time as any to make a change. If you are lame like me and want to keep up with the Apple conference to hear all the up-to-minute news, check out the live blogs here (starting around 1pm EST). I swear I'm not a fanboy - I don't even own a Mac - I just really want an iphone...
That's it for me today. I'm hopefully back to some semi-regular blogging after some really slow down time. Lataz,
Until next time, may the felt be with you.
