Talk To The Hand...History (Part 1)

As poker players, we see incorrect plays ALL THE TIME. More times than I'd like to admit, I'm making the wawful play. Usually I try to suck it up, figure out how and why I made the clown move, then move on. Just last night in the Mookie I played my last hand horribly and paid the price. I had no reason to make the move I did, but I did it anyway. I know I was wrong, but I moved on because I had no one to blame but myself.

Sometimes, however, I see players make moves that I deem incorrect, then they mouth off about the hand as if they were robbed. In some instances they dive into a chat tirade for the rest of the tournament, following their villain from table to table mouthing off to anyone who will listen. Other times, they just whip out one verbal jab as a sweet little fuck you on their way out the door.

Well I'm here to bring those particular hand histories to the masses and see what others think. I'm not trying to call out anyone or make anyone look like an ass. That's not my point here. I'm just hoping that we can have a little fun with a hand history and hopefully some people can learn a thing or two from the comments on the hand.

So if you are part of a particular hand history and have a beef with me for posting it here, please take it easy. In fact, I don't plan to list the names of those in the hand, so it really shouldn't be a big deal. I will list the winner of the hand as "Fuck Yeah!" and the loser of the hand (and the subsequent person who makes the comment after the fact) as "Fuck No!" Sometimes I will be involved in the hand history, but other times I will just have witnessed it play out at my table. I expect this might become a regular theme on my blog considering how often I see smack talk at the table. Guess it will depend on if the smack talk is legit.

For today's Talk To The Hand...History, I was not in the particular hand in question.

Here it is all spiffed up using PokerXFactor.

The Great Chase

In addition to the hand history above, I've listed the basic hand history at the bottom of this post for those who would rather view it that way or cannot view the above version.

Now after this hand was over, Fuck No! rattled off the comment "Great Chase" and then promptly left the table (or at least did not comment again). Curious (and bored), I decided to take a gander at the hand history right then and there to see if his facetious jab was warranted.

Though I have already done a detailed analysis of the hand history, I'm going to refrain from posting it now as I'd rather let the readers review and make their own comments without my opinions swaying the situation.

I will note this however. I have no problem with people making mistakes in poker or just straight up playing a hand wrong. Like I noted above, I do it more than I care to remember. I'm in the same camp as Chad. If someone buys into a tournament, they can play any two cards they choose and their is nothing we can do about it. I am absolutely cool with that idea. What I do think is tarded is when someone plays a hand questionably, then makes an ill-advised comment as if they were robbed, when in all actuality, their play warranted the result.

So with all the above duly noted, was this The Case Of The Great Chase or did Fuck No! get what he deserved?

Today has been a hectic day of travel planning. It started with confirming flight plans for a buddies bachelor party in St. Louis in July. That will be beyond hella super fun. I will be hanging with my best St. Louis...for a bachelor party! Let the good times roll.

I followed that flight confirmation with a reservation for our family vacation at Myrtle Beach in August. I have the best time on family vacations 'cause I have a kick ask family. ChickJax is all about beach vacations, so it is always easy to plan them for us. Is there water and sand? Check! Will there be sun? Check! Gotta love how simple that is.

Finally, but probably most important for this blog and my readers, it looks like I WILL BE AT OKIE-VEGAS AGAIN THIS YEAR! I still can't believe what I'm about to write. I will be driving instead of flying this year. On July 18th I'll drive to Atlanta to meet up with Surflexus. From there we will head to Tunica. At that point we'll decide whether to play some poker or just grab a bite to eat and move on.

Who am I kidding? Once we reach Tunica, we'll decide HOW LONG to play poker, then we'll hit the road to finish up the trip to Okie-Vegas. I gotta tell ya, I am so stoked about going to Okie-Vegas again this year. I'm really looking forward to hanging with Surflexus during the drive there too. If you've ever played poker or spoken to him, you know he is good people and hilarious to boot.

It sounds crazy considering the amount of time we've spent together online, but this will actually be the first time that GCox, Jordan and I will be at the same event at the same time. That will be hella cool. And of course it will be kick ask to see some familiar faces or meet some new folks as well(click here for a tentative list that probably needs to be updated).

So, bottomline is I'm pumped about my travel plans this year. Now I just gotta find the money to pay for all this stuff. Come on poker...luck be a lady tonight at the Mookie!

Until next time, may the felt be with you.

This week is one of those weeks you're going to wish you were me. You'll trudge around all week with your head down, kicking empty soda cans, thinking of what it would be like to be TripJax. Unfortunately, for you, we can't all be me.

What is it that is so great about being me this week you ask? Well as it turns out, I have been given the highly esteemed honor of Guest Donkey Blog Of The Week over at Don Morris' blog. The picture in the post pretty much sums it up. What is most exciting is I'm only the 2nd to receive this accolade from Don. The inaguaral weekly winner was none other than Wawfuls. I stand on the shoulders of giants, my friends.

The motivation behind my award winning ways stems from last weeks Friday Donkament. I had chipped up in my usual donkey way when the following hand occurred. Keep in mind I've been playing hella aggro most of the tournament, but we are now past the rebuy stage...

Clown Hand

I dubbed the hand in question clown hand cause that is what I was called after it was over. Don was unhappy with the result, to say the least, but I stood by my play. I even asked him to write up a post about the hand, which he graciously obliged. I agree with his thoughts in that post. I know he was just blowing off steam after a perceived suck out, but I've looked back at the hand history numerous times and just don't mind my play on any of the streets. I'd be interested to hear the opinions of others if anyone has the time.

And yes, I put The Hoy on him like nobody's business. To me, that was the best part of the hand, but I'm sure it didn't help with his steaming ways immediately after. To those who don't know, to "Hoy" someone is to put them all-in except for one chip. That way, if they lose the hand, they are left with 1 chip to work with. I don't use this technique enough in my tournament strategy, but I really need to put it back in my regular arsenal.

I know full well Don was just blowing off steam directly after the hand, which is why I think we had some fun with it after the fact. In fact, I even changed my avatar from the donkey to the clown. I've had some decent results as a clown lately. I may just have to stick it out for a while.

So thank you Don for graciously bestowing upon me the awe-inspiring honor of Guest Donkey Blog Of The Week. I pwn.

If you've never been over to Don's blog before, be sure and check it out...some good stuff going on there.

I finished 2nd in the Hoy last night. That makes a 3rd place last week and a 2nd place this week in that tournament. By that rationale, you should all know what to expect next week.

That's pretty much all I've got today. Why don't you join me at The Mookie this Wednesday? After two weeks away from that tournament, I've started getting the shakes. Good thing I can make it this week.

Until next time, may the felt be with you. <>

Loves Me Some Friday

We did quite well in our audit, so I'm as happy as a tarded lemur who just sucked out on the river. Looks as though I've fooled them yet again. I get to stay gainfully employed for the foreseeable future. Man I've got these people fooled. If they only knew I think about poker and boobies 1/2 the day. I come! There will be no tear in my beer tonight! Fushizzle!

*End Update*

The culmination of two weeks worth of gruelling work comes to close in about 1 hour (10:00 am on Friday). I've worked my ask off these two weeks and I'm really hoping it pays off. It's a strange feeling having people review and critique your work for two whole weeks. To say I'm ready for this to be over is an understatement.

If we end up with a great audit report, I will be drinking heavily tonight. If we end up with a terrible audit report, I will be drinking heavily tonight. In other words, if you are a betting man, which I know you are, you might want to bet on me getting sloshed tonight. Not sure if Bodog will draw up that line or not, but it's a sure fire winner.

I'll be back later today to report on if there will be a tear in my beer tonight or not.

Oh, and on a side note, since this is a poker blog, I finished 3rd in the Hoy on Monday. I only had one suck out, and it did not result in the player getting knocked out, so I feel great about my play. There was one tough moment that I would rather have not had to deal with, but it worked out in the end. Down to 5 players, I heard a loud boom outside my house and the power went out. Was I concerned about losing the power? Nope. Was I concerned that I was going to get blinded out of the final table in 5th place? Yep. You can see where my priorities are.

Turns out it was only a short time with the power out and I missed about 5 minutes of the tournament. When I came back to the table 2 of the players had been knocked out and there was still no absolute monster chip leader. It was then I felt pretty damn good about my chances of winning. Unfortunately, I lost some chips over a short period of time and found myself in a situation where I wanted/needed a double up. This is where I ended up coming over the top of an Otis raise all-in with a crap hand like K5 against his 99 and I sucked out on him.

I really, really needed a finish in a tournament like this not only to take a break from work, but also because I've been running ugly at the tables for a couple of months now. The downward spiral was disheartening so getting a final table was gravy.

7 Thangs

Well I'm still knee dip in work shizzle, but so far so good. Monday night was the first night I was home at a relatively normal hour in over a week. Fifteen hour days suck, but oh well. It hurt missing the Mookie and the Big Game this past week, but there was nothing I could do.

If I do well in our audit, I get a heap of praise and can receive a bonus equivalent to approximately 20% of my current salary. If I don't do well, I get no bonus and a shit ton of disappointment thrust in my general direction.

"I'll take 20% bonus and a heapin' helpin' of praise for $200 Alex."

On Saturday I did manage to take a break from work long enough to enjoy some good time happy fun with my friends. My birthday was May 9th, but they were throwing me a belated birthday party since the timing didn't work around the 9th. It seems I'm not alone in thinking May is a kick ask month for birthdays and parties. I know I mentioned it on Al's blog already, but happy birthday Iggy.

They went all out for my party which was really cool. It was mexican themed and there was enough beer and liquor to kill a man. I haven't done tequila shots in years, but I managed to drop a few throughout the night. I also managed to drop my fair share of margaritas, which is a rarity for me. All in all it was a damn good night. I got to hang with the ladies AND beat the shit out of a flamboyant donkey. In that last pic I was doing my best samurai swordsman and just about knocked over the tiki torch. I r geenus.

It seems I've been tagged for the 7 things about me meme that is going around. I'm finally up to the task, though I fear my 7 things are pretty boring. I'm sure somewhere along the way I've snuck a few of these things into ye ole blog, but whatever...

7 Thangs About Me You Might Not Know

1) I can balance all kinds of shit on all kinds of places on my body. Sticks, tables, chairs, name it and I can probably balance it. I mainly balance stuff on my nose, unless it is too heavy, in which case I do it on my chin. It doesn't stop there, however, as I can also balance things on my forehead, elbows, feet, and knees. I know what you're thinking right now. No, I've never tried, but if I did, I probably could...with some help from ChickJax of course. Believe it or not, I've actually balanced a person on my chin. A very small, light person, but a person nonetheless.

2) I'm an extremely lazy person. I like to call it "laid back," but what it boils down to is laziness. I could sit on the couch ALL DAY, EVERY DAY and feel just fine about it. Luckily, or rather thankfully, I have a job and a kick ask family to keep me on my toes and keep me from being a fat bastard.

3) I am deathly afraid of heights. I have a problem even cleaning the gutters on my own house. I'm even afraid of heights for other people. Just looking at pictures like this make my palms sweaty. My palms get even more sweaty when we go to the circus each year and I see the trapeze artists. Damn those crazy ass asian trapeze artists have no fear! On a side note, anytime I play live poker with an erratic asian player, I call him or her Crazian.

4) Number two and three duly noted, it probably isn't much of a surprise that I'm not a thrill seeker. I don't need to jump out of a plane or climb a mountain to get high. An ice cold beer is much easier to drink on the couch.

5) For whatever reason, elderly black women always seem to think I'm hot. This would be kick ask if I was an elderly black man, but I'm not.

6) I've been hooked in the mouth just like a fish. When I was probably 6 or 7 our family was planning a day trip to go fishing. While my Dad was getting the car packed, I was playing in the yard and my brother was practicing his casting skills in the driveway. He didn't see me playing in the yard, or wasn't paying attention, and sent the hooked fishing wire sailing through the air. It went right over my head just as he yanked back on the fishing pole. The hook went straight in my mouth, hooked me square in the lip, and sent me to the ground. Our trip to the lake turned into a trip to the hospital. Still that's nothing compared to McMillan.

7) I once ended up in the hospital for a week and never found out what the problem was. The doctors originally thought I had appendicitis, but when that theory was debunked, they were at a loss. My friends contend that I was full of shit...otherwise known as seriously constipated, but I know better. I felt like I was absolutely dying the day I was put in the hospital, but to this day I have no idea what was wrong with me.

So there are my seven craptastic things. The following peeps should consider themselves tagged if they have not been already...

Until next time, may the felt be with you.

Damn The Man

I almost never talk about work at this here blog. D'oh!

I work in the financial services industry. Companies like the one I work for take their audits very seriously. So seriously that sometimes they initiate surprise audits of certain branches. I'm working in a nearby office this week as a manager resigned last Friday and they need supervisory support in the interim. Internal auditors just showed up this morning (Wednesday) for a surprise audit and will be here through Monday. I have reason to believe they will be headed to my actual office next week to audit my work. Two weeks of audits...of which one week I'm having to deal with it and its not even my own office.

I'm writing all this right now for two reasons.

1) To note that this seriously sucks and will continue to seriously suck for approximately two weeks.

2) To note I will have zero time for the blog and poker until this shit blows over.

I missed the Mookie tonight so you know things were bad for me. I almost never miss the Mookie.

I'll be back to post as soon as I can. Damn the man.

Kaiser Soze

My splendiferous return to online poker after a short hiatus ended with an uninspiring finish of 15th out of 47 entrants. I don't recall one exciting hand for the entire tournament, except for a KJ versus 44 race where I hit my King to stay alive. Even that only brought me to around 6k which was still well below the average. Early in the tournament I was chip leader, but that only lasted about 10 minutes. Just wasn't my night.

While I fizzled out, my brother (ChapelncHill) once again made the final table and was in the money, finishing in 6th place. I'm guessing he will probably break the top 50 of the Battle Of The Blogger Tournaments leaderboard after last nights finish coupled with his 2nd place in last weeks MATH. Having only played a couple of events, I'd say that's not too shabby.

I wish this post was headed in a positive direction, but it's just not one of those days. Last month I mentioned how our cat Jah is not doing so well after we noticed a tumor on her neck. She has managed to hold strong and is still with us though we know it is probably just a matter of time. We are holding out hope that the medicine and her tenacity will keep her around for quite a while longer.

Unfortunately, however, the beats just keep coming. Today we are taking our dog, Kaiser Soze, to be put to sleep. A few weeks ago we took him into the vet because he's had a terrible cough of late and has lost a lot of weight and energy. On the way to the vet he even collapsed and has done so several times since. Turns out he has severe heart failure and his organs are just giving up on him. He is a full black lab and is 8 years old. I can't help but feel he is leaving us before his time, but he is suffering terribly right now. This morning he was coughing up blood. That's no way to live and the vet has advised us there is nothing left for us to do.

Kaiser, I will miss you old friend. We love you.

And yes, we named him after the "character" in The Usual Suspects, though we spelled the name a little differently. He was cool like that. His papers actually read Kaiser Sose, but I've always said it Soze, so I go with that

Sorry to be such a downer today, but Kaiser deserves a tribute 'cause he's always been a good dog to us.

10 Days Later

Wow, not posting for 10 days feels like fuheva. When I don't post for several days, I sort of feel like when I don't water a plant. I know the plant is there waiting for me to water it, but there's just so much other shit going on that I can't get to it.

Well I'm back, so lets splash some water and this here plant. Alas, I feel this post will not be the grand spectacle it should be after my hiatus. I must admit I did feel a tinge of guilt for not posting for so many days, but it felt damn good to take a break. Since May 4th, I've spent virtually no time online. Only a couple minutes to reply to some emails.

So what has happened since my last post? I successfully traveled to NY and back, which was quite an experience. I had the chance to play in an underground poker club with your friend and mine, Jordan. The highlight of my night did not come with the cards as I was absolutely card dead and never had a chance to make any moves with anything. It was truly an ugly experience as far as the cards were concerned.

However, one cool thing happened while playing. After about 30 minutes of fold, fold, fold from yours truly, one of the other players – a young female with pep in her step and a damn good game – looked over at me and said, "I think I know you…are you a blogger?" I quizzically gave the nod yes and she then stated, "You are here on a business trip in Jersey City right?"

She was right on both accounts and over the next few minutes we talked our way through how she knew me and my blog. It's pretty wild to go from Greensboro NC to New York City, find a small underground game, then get outted as a poker blogger. Pretty damn cool, I must say. As it turns out, she is a blogger as well and, in fact, managed to finish 2nd at the most recent Blogger Bracelet Race. Of all the tournaments to finish 2nd in, that was not the one, because only 1st place paid out a $1500 seat. Ouch! Still, nice job LJ, and it was great to meet you.

And of course, I had a great time with Jordan. We had a mellow, but enjoyable night of poker, including some Chinese Poker at a bar after the tournament. Honestly, Jordan does a much nicer job of detailing the night here. Thanks for hanging with me Jordan.

While in NY, I had planned to play in the Hoy as is typical for me on Monday's. I pre-registered as I had a feeling I would be late returning from our meetings. Little did I know I wouldn’t' make it back to the hotel until after 2am. We ended up going out in NY City and we had a blast. Indeed it was the best tournament I never played and the best $26 buy-in spent in quite a while. Unfortunately I didn't manage to fold my way into the points, though I thought I had a chance. I think I missed it by 5 spots.

On the bright side, my brother, ChapelncHill, managed to finish 2nd for a strong showing. He's been playing the blogger tourneys with me lately and I'm glad he finally broke through into the money at the Hoy after only a few tries. I heard he "made some friends" with a few of the bloggers and had a couple of bounties put on his head. Ah, you sweet, sweet poker bloggers. Gotta love it.
Barring any unforeseen issues, I should be back at the tables tonight at The Hoy. See you there…

One last note before I bolt. I am way, way behind on reading your blog posts so bear with me if I've missed anything. I did just noticed I was tagged to do some type of post, but I'll have to read more on the details. I should be back to regular blogging this week. It's good to be back!

These Vagabond Shoes Are Longing To Stray

Well we didn't see any donkeys at our trip to the zoo yesterday, so the kids missed out on a chance to see some of their family heritage. Guess I'll just have to teach them the ways of the donkey on the felt. Regardless of the donkeys being MIA, we had a hella good time seeing all the animals - including the "magrilla's" - as my son has dubbed the gorillas.

Thanks to any and all who responded to - or took action on - my post from yesterday. Like I said, not a big deal, but just a little something to let a fellow blogger know his work is appreciated.

If you read Jordan's recent post thoroughly, then you know I'm going to be headed his way next week. Specifically I'm headed to Jersey City on Monday morning for a 3 day business trip, but I plan to make my way to New York either Monday or Tuesday night after all the business crap slows down. Jordan and I will be hanging out, then playing some poker, so I'm really excited about the trip. I've never been to New York so this trip should be a great experience for me.

After New York I have more business in Charlotte, so I may not be posting here again until next Friday. I doubt I'll go that long, but I'm just throwing it out there. In the meantime, be sure to check into the Battle Of The Blogger Tournaments site to keep up with the tournament action available...

Until next time, may the felt be with you.

99 Problems But The Mook Ain't One

Wuzzup peoplez? I'm in a great mood right now 'cause I'm hoisting the middle finger in the general direction of my employer this fine Thursday. Specifically, I'm headed to the Zoo with the family instead of the office. I don't know what it is, but my time away from work these days feels oh so good.

You can bet if we come across a donkey exhibit at the zoo, I'll be introducing KidJax and LilJax to a little piece of our family history. "Yes son, this donkey here is GrandpaJax. He plays King Jack offsuit for a re-raise even better than your Pops." Good times will indeed be had by all.

As I always say, time is money and I have neither, so lets light this candle all quick a proper like. I may be completely out of line here - it most certainly wouldn't be the first time - but I want to put a request out there to the poker bloggers of the world. And folks, this is NOT one of those big deal things here. Just here me out...

This past Sunday, we poker bloggers helped send a fellow blogger to the 2007 WSOP. This happened thanks to some hard work by big brother Al. But his work didn't end when the tourney kicked off. Instead, he had to keep at it. We didn't have enough entries to guarantee the seat, but he still tried to make it work via the Full Tilt Support. When that didn't work he managed to work some more to get the final tablers to agree to still send the 1st place winner to the WSOP.

After all this, he then ponied up his own cash to cover the remainder of the $1500 seat. Now I don't know about you, but I think there needs to be more folks out there like Al. I seem to recall another poker blogger who graciously did the same thing last year as well. Lets not forget that Al's also helping bring us the BBT as well. People like Mookie, Al and Hoy are stepping up to the plate, all in the name of poker bloggery fun. Cool ass kids in my book.

To make a long story short, whether he wants it or not, I think Al deserves a little tiny bit of help on this one. So here's what I'm getting at. Next time you are on Full Tilt, if you get a hankerin', drop $5 or $10 via transfer to screen name AlCantHang. Even if just ten folks do that, it will at least put a dent in whatever he ponied up himself, not to mention the time and effort.

I'm hoping Al isn't pissed that I did this and please don't think I have any further motivations or intentions. Al DID NOT have anything to do with this and I may be stepping over the line, but I hope not. The thought just hit me this past Sunday and I decided to do something about it. Maybe I should have brought this up in a more private email...but I'm in a hurry and I'm also lazy. So there's that.

Anyway, if you don't want to do it, then that's absolutely no big deal. But if you do, just know that your transfer could help fund Al's next shot of Southern Comfort. I don't know about you, but the thought of a shot glass laying dormant just makes me sad. However, the thought of Al toasting his fellow bloggers while hoisting a shot of SoCo paid for by a couple of blogger transfers makes me happy.

Moving on...

As for actual poker content, I was running goot at the Mook last night, but it wasn't meant to be. I did finish in the points, but couldn't get back to the final table. My all-in preflop with AA ended up getting smoked by a player with a similar stack size. If I can avoid that one big suckout, which seems to be coming at the most most inopportune times these days, then I know I'll get back to rarified air soon. Oh well.

Until next time, may the felt be with you.
